Mohe Polar Simulation Experiment Base

To enhance polar scientific research, Polar Academy, Harbin Institute of Technology and Heilongjiang Meteorological Bureau have jointly established the "Harbin Institute of Technology-Heilongjiang Meteorological Bureau Mohe Polar Simulation Experiment Base" (hereinafter referred to as “Base”).

The Base is Located in the North Pole Village of Mohe, known as the "Chinese Arctic" (53 °28N, 122 °22'E), near the northernmost border of China. The lowest temperature reached -52.3 ℃ that is also the lowest in China. The meteorology, biology and electromagnetic environment in the Base is similar to that in Polar Regions, hence it provides with the natural conditions to implement the simulation experiments of scientific polar research.

The base observation field is at an altitude of 296.0 meters, equipped with the instruments for meteorological, atmospheric, ecological and other monitoring equipment. The Base has established a relatively adequate observation system for polar scientific research, and is suitable for long-term polar simulation experiments.

 The Base will work mainly in the following areas:

  • To study on the environmental behavior and gas-particle partition of pollutants in polar regions, taking advantages of the local meteorological conditions;

  • To carry out the testing of solar radiation and interstellar magnetosphere, ionosphere, upper atmosphere detection, space high energy radiation;

  • To magnetic storms and other effects on communications;

  • To join in the “Meridian Program” and carry out research on space environment, geomagnetic field etc.;

  • To study on the special effect mechanism of extreme environment on life process, and carry out the research on the scientific laws of biological diversity, life origin and evolution in extreme cold region;

  • To carry out scientific research and technical applications in the fields of heavy pollution projection, air quality monitoring and modeling, natural ecological remote sensing monitoring, and water quality prediction of major rivers; and

  • To develope remote sensing monitoring technologies to promote multi-source satellite data fusion and satellite data assimilation.
